There was a time when mom became too weak to take care of herself, the only option was “the old people’s home”. Now our choices are much improved. We have facilities for independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing homes and nursing homes. Many of these have the look, feel and amenities of a resort. Many of them even call themselves “retirement resorts”.

They are a lot of fun, but some can be really pricey too. But for the elderly loved one who wants to stay in his home, the home where he feels safe, surrounded by neighbors he trusts and in the home of memories we now have in home care.

Senior care or elderly care encompasses a wide range of services provided over an extended period of time to people who require assistance in performing normal activities of daily living due to cognitive impairment or loss of muscle strength or control.

Elderly care may include rehabilitation therapies, skilled nursing care, palliative care provided by hospices and social services, as well as supervision and a wide range of supportive personal care provided by informal caregivers and/or home care facilities. Elderly care may also include training to help older people adapt to or overcome many of the limitations often associated with aging. If necessary, it is best to provide care for the elderly in the home situation first.

Where do we begin when looking for elder care resources for a loved one? Tools that can help the elderly stay in their own homes are the first place to start. A variety of independent living services are now available to help older people take care of themselves in their own homes, despite their changing physical needs. This can help, delay or prevent the move to an assisted living or nursing home altogether.
