Jhon Jairo Velásquez Vásquez, better known as “Popeye”, is remembered for being Pablo Escobar’s trusted hitman and one of the most dangerous criminals within the Medellín Cartel.
The bloodthirsty hitman would have murdered around 250 people under the orders of Pablo Escobar and his macabre actions made him one of the most feared men in the world.
However, his harsh image in the world of drug trafficking could be a facade because “Popeye” was not who everyone believed.
According to Nicolás Escobar, nephew of “El Patrón”, Jhon Jairo Velásquez Vásquez was not really the dangerous assassin he presumed to be and did not have the respect of his other colleagues in the Medellín Cartel.
Through an interview with Infobae Colombia, Pablo Escobar’s nephew described “Popeye” as a “clown” and denied his profile as a feared hitman.

“If we review Popeye’s criminal history, we realize that he never had a way. If you wanted to work for Pablo, you had to have a way, Popeye was simply a driver for one of the many girlfriends that Pablo had and that, because he was so charro, Pablo left him working with him, “he revealed.
However, Nicolás acknowledged the participation of “Popeye” in some illegal activities of this criminal organization and commented on the way in which he helped Pablo Escobar in his escape from La Catedral prison.

“I am not going to want to stop saying or telling that Popeye was in different turns that were made for the Medellín Cartel, but to get to the exact point, you have to know that Pablo grew up throughout his childhood and part of his youth exactly In that sector of Antioquia, in Envigado, Pablo knew all those hills in that sector, leaving La Ceja towards the airport, he covered all of this not only doing sports and walking, but also riding a horse and riding motorcycles”, he concluded.
