WASHINGTON (Reuters) – US Border Guard agents have seen a 50% drop in the number of migrants crossing the border since the pandemic-era immigration policy known as Title 42 expired at midnight on Thursday, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said on CNN’s “State of the Union” program on Sunday.
“Over the past two days, the United States Border Patrol has experienced a 50% drop in encounters from what we experienced earlier in the week before Title 42 ended at midnight on Thursday,” said Mayorkas.
“It’s early days. We’re on day three. But we’ve been planning this transition for months and months.”
Mayorkas said U.S. Border Patrol officers had about 6,300 encounters with border crossings on Friday and another 4,200 on Saturday, compared to more than 10,000 shortly before Title 42 expired.
