A missing chapter of the Bible has finally been found after 1,500 years.
The chapter, called “Secret Verses,” was found in a 3rd-century manuscript inside the Vatican Library. It contains a new translation of chapters 11 to 12 from the Gospel of Matthew.
Scientists were able to reveal the text, written in ancient Syriac, after using ultraviolet photography inside the Gospel of Matthew.
In the original Greek translation, Matthew, a disciple of Jesus, wrote: “At that time Jesus passed through the wheat fields on the Sabbath, and his disciples got hungry and began to gather the ears of wheat and eat.”
But the newly discovered translation says: At that time Jesus passed through the grain fields on the Sabbath and his disciples were hungry and began to gather ears of wheat, rub them in their hands and eat them.’
A scribe apparently erased the chapter as it was being written. Only a portion of the recovered text has been released to the public so far.
Grigory Kessel, who made the discovery, told DailyMail.com: The gospel text found in this reused manuscript contains so-called Old Syriac translations of the gospels. This old Syriac translation often proves the gospel text to be different from the standard gospel text as we know it today.
The Gospel of Matthew forms the core of the 27 books of the New Testament. Matthew’s section begins to describe the birth of Jesus and also includes early correspondence between Church leaders and Christians.
