Minister of State for the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia and the United Nations, Lord (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon, visited Morocco from 8 to 9 May 2023. He attended the fourth UK-Morocco Bilateral Strategic Dialogue, following and complementing the UK Morocco Association Council on 16 February in Rabat.

During his visit, Lord Ahmad visited and prayed at the iconic Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, meeting established representatives of British business there. On 9 May, Lord Ahmad co-chaired the ministerial session of the annual United Kingdom-Morocco Strategic Dialogue, along with Mr Nasser Bourita, the Foreign Minister of Morocco, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, as host. As evidenced by their Joint statementministers discussed deepening cooperation between the UK and Morocco and set priorities for the following year, under the 4 pillars of cooperation: politics, economics, security and defence, and education and culture.

This cooperation includes growing bilateral cooperation in the health and agriculture sectors, as well as in the areas of climate, energy and sustainable finance. Ministers signed a ‘Strategic cooperation framework on climate action, clean energy and green growth’. It also includes:

*ongoing exchange of expertise, such as the ‘Jebel Sahara’ and ‘African Lion’ joint defense exercises, both held in 2022

Ministers also discussed regional and international issues of common concern. These include the situation in Sudan and Libya, developments in Israel and the OPTs, the ongoing global implications of the war between Russia and Ukraine, and food security in Africa.

After his visit, Lord Ahmad said:

This was a fruitful visit that builds on the strong relationship between our 2 countries. It follows our collaboration as guest of honor at the 15th edition of SIAM in Meknes last week, and we were honored to host HRH Princess Lalla Meryem at the coronation of HM King Charles III last week. I am confident that this relationship will continue to flourish in the future as our 2 kingdoms work together on political, economic and security issues, connecting our people and cultures.”
