In an interview, the Turkish president discussed the second round of the presidential election to be held on May 28, expressing his belief that the Turkish people will once again demonstrate their strong democracy with a significant voter turnout of 90%.
In an interview with CNN International, Recep Tayyip Erdogan also discussed many issues from the election process to foreign policy.
When asked about his level of comfort, given his successful track record of winning elections and breaking records over the past 20 years, Erdogan reiterated his confidence in the Turkish people and strong democracy, emphasizing the importance of high voter turnout. He expressed hope that the public would not be disappointed.
Reminding that US President Joe Biden described himself as an autocrat during his election campaign, the Turkish president questioned how a person who made it to the second round, not the first, could be considered a dictator.
Emphasizing that the People’s Alliance will enter the parliament with 322 deputies and the leader of the alliance (Erdoğan) will win the second round, he said, “What kind of dictatorship is this?”
When asked if he would work with the Biden administration if he was re-elected, Erdogan said that he had no doubts that he would work with President Biden, and that he would work with a new one if the Biden administration changes.
When asked about the West’s attitude towards Russia in the Ukraine conflict, President Erdoğan said that the West did not take a balanced approach on this issue, referring to his previous statements that the West was following a more provocative policy.
He argued that a balanced approach to a country like Russia would be more appropriate. Emphasizing the need for mutual cooperation in the world, emphasizing positive relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, he suggested that the West should adopt a similar approach.
Referring to the Black Sea Grain Corridor, where Turkey meets the needs of not only the West but also African countries, Erdoğan drew attention to the extension of grain processes with Russia, thanks to his special relationship with Putin.
Erdogan’s People’s Alliance won the majority in the parliament, while the presidential race goes to the second round on 28 May.
Although Erdoğan was ahead in the first round held on May 14, no candidate achieved an absolute majority.
In the second round, Erdoğan will face Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the leader of the main opposition CHP and the joint candidate of the 6-party opposition Nation Alliance.
