They had convictions for manslaughter and aggravated robbery. They left the jail on foot and a van picked them up. Nobody knows where they are.

Less than a month ago, the two prisoners who escaped from Sierra Chica prison 27 had been placed in a wing of that prison, which has an open regime. That is, with minimal security measures even when they had been convicted of serious crimes.

Passing through these units without severe restrictions on controls is the step prior to obtaining conditional or final release. And the requirement that Justice requires to grant the benefit is to have good grades on the behavior sheet.

Cristian Sosa Mazurik (23) and Matías Joaquín Sánchez Honores (27) spent more than four years in a strict regime and obtained the “pass” to this unit where the condemned who are about to leave or have good conduct are housed.

They were installed in cell No. 1 of pavilion 2, of open sector 1 in the first week of May. Near that place is the most famous detainee of Penitentiary unit 27: the multiple murderer Carlos Eduardo Robledo Puch (71), who has been in prison for more than 50 years and is now under that regime in the prison complex that remains in the center of the city. Province, near the city of Olavarría.

Cristian Sosa, one of the two prisoners who escaped from the Sierra Chica prison.

Sosa Mazurik, had been detained since August 2019 for two crimes: possession of a weapon of war and robbery aggravated by the use of a firearm. He was sentenced by the Court in the courts of Mercedes. His prison journey was under the responsibility of Execution Court No. 2 of Mercedes, in charge of Judge Ricardo Fabio Oliveira Buscarini, who authorized the transfer on April 3 of this year.

His sentence was completed in February 2026. According to judicial sources, he was in a position to obtain parole. Now, that prerogative would be lost by this evasion.

Sánchez Honores had been in prison since June 2018 for aggravated homicide and attempted simple homicide, in a case that was investigated in Lomas de Zamora. He was sentenced to 8 years and 6 months. He would have ended his debt to Justice in May 2026. “He was a few months away from accessing parole.” His files were in the hands of Execution Courts No. 2 and 4 of the Lomas de Zamora Judicial Department, in charge of judges Etel Beatriz Bielajew and Juan Ignacio Sorrentino, respectively.

Sosa and Sanchez escaped on Wednesday while they were having a recreation at the Sierra Chica prison, according to sources in the case.

The Buenos Aires Penitentiary Service (SPB) says that there was no “escape” because they are not controlled in that condition that Justice granted them. “When the inmates broke the regime (not escape), the SPB immediately alerted the Police to implement a recapture operation,” the agency said.

And he clarified that inmates serving “the last stage of the sentence” are referred to this unit, according to article 121 of the Buenos Aires Criminal Execution Law. This regulation establishes that “armed prison personnel cannot be assigned to internal security and that only prison guards are authorized on the perimeter,” they said in the SPB.

“The dependencies of the open regime will have housing characteristics that guarantee an adequate level of privacy, lacking the following security measures: uniformed armed guard, perimeter walls, bars or other forms of containment,” they clarified in the provincial control force.

The prisoners left in a Toyota Hilux van. It was a voluntary decision, because they had no resistance. The police were immediately notified and began an operation to recapture the condemned. Until this Thursday, both remain fugitives and are intensely wanted. This Thursday, a neighbor from Saladillo denounced that one of them might have wanted to enter his house. It has not been confirmed that they are Sosa and Sanchez, the escapees from Sierra Chica.

The SPB has five open regime units. They work in Olmos (Unit No. 26); Gorina (No. 12); Baradero (No. 11), Alvear (No. 14) and Sierra Chica (No. 27).

The one that housed the two who left on Wednesday and Robledo Puch was inaugurated on September 24, 1993. It has training workshops in micro-enterprises such as a course on waste separation and treatment, vermiculture, organic gardening, raising laying hens, ducks, sheep and pigs, among other agricultural activities, according to the SPB. The entire population (about 200) of inmates is included in maintenance work, production workshops and job training courses. In addition, educational centers operate: Primary School for Adults No. 701 and secondary school at the Middle School No. 5.

In the Province there are more than 50,000 people deprived of their liberty housed in the prison system. According to the latest records managed by human rights organizations, just over 1,000 are in these open or semi-open regimes.
