So it appears that a shutdown of the state apparatus has been averted. At least until mid-November.

The proposal was adopted by 335 votes to 91 during the vote in the House of Representatives on Saturday afternoon local time. It will now move to a vote in the Senate, where Democrats have a majority. Senators have until midnight local time to approve the proposal.

According to American media, the temporary budget has money set aside for disaster relief for areas in the US affected by natural disasters. But no money has been allocated for military or other financial support to Ukraine.

It was the under-pressure leader of the House of Representatives, Republican Kevin McCarthy, who managed to work out a compromise that would also be supported by Democrats.

Republicans have a majority in the House of Representatives, but during Saturday’s vote a two-thirds majority was needed to pass the proposal. Only one Democrat voted against. So did 90 Republicans.
