Isidor and Ida Straus, in-laws of the late Stockton Rush, are remembered for a gesture of love recounted by witnesses to the tragedy of the ocean liner in 1912. James Cameron honored them with a scene in his legendary film.

Wendy Rush, wife of Stockton Rush, the owner and pilot of the Titan submersible that imploded on an expedition to the wreck of the Titanic, is the descendant of a famous couple who died during the tragic sinking of the famous ocean liner in 1912.

According to historical archives and as reported by the American newspaper The New York Times in an investigation, Wendy Rush is the great-great-granddaughter of Isidor and Ida Straus. The man was a retail magnate, co-owner of Macy’s department store.

Specifically, Wendy is descended from one of the Strauss’ daughters, Minnie. She married Dr. Richard Weil in 1905, and her son, Richard Weil Jr., Wendy Rush’s grandfather, was president of Macy’s in New York.

Isidor and Ida Straus, who had been married for 40 years, starred in a well-known and documented love scene from that fateful Titanic accident: witnesses to the tragedy claimed that they decided to die together when the ship sank, arm in arm.

Survivors said Isidor refused to board a lifeboat as women and children were still waiting to be rescued. On his part, his wife said that she was not going to abandon her husband and she stayed with him as the ship sank.

The body of Isidor Straus was found at sea several weeks after the tragedy, according to the New York Times archives. The remains of Ida Straus were not recovered.

Director James Cameron immortalized a fictionalized version of their story in his 1997 film, which shows a scene of an elderly couple embracing in bed as the ship sinks.
