A 30-year-old male suspect was detained, a German said the police on June 15, after two women were pushed into a canyon the previous day, killing one, near Germany’s landmark Neuschwanstein Castle.

Police said two female tourists, aged 21 and 22, were led by the suspect to a path near the castle where, they said, the 21-year-old was attacked.

“When the 22-year-old tried to intervene,” she was “suffocated,” police said, and “pushed… down a steep slope.”

“According to the current state of knowledge, an attempted sex crime against the 21-year-old must be assumed,” the police said. The suspect “then pushed her down the slope, where she came to rest next to her boyfriend after falling nearly 50 meters.”

The 21-year-old woman, who was taken to hospital by helicopter, died last night, police said.

The suspect was described by the neighbor Allgäuer Zeitung as an American tourist.
