The Metropolis of Birmingham’s first Black police officer, Leroy Stover, has died. He was 90.
Birmingham Police on Friday posted about Stover’s demise on X, previously often called Twitter.
“As we speak, our hearts are heavy as we mourn the lack of former Deputy Chief Leroy Stover. As the primary black officer to combine the Birmingham power, his legacy and work on the Birmingham Police Division paved a approach for others to comply with in his footsteps,” the division mentioned.

Stover died Thursday, al.com reported. He was 90 years outdated. The police division didn’t share a explanation for demise. Funeral preparations are pending.
Stover joined the power in March 1966 on the age of 33 and rose to the rank of deputy chief. He retired in 1998, with 32 years of service, information retailers reported.
“We provide our full condolences to the household and know that he would eternally be in our hearts and thoughts,” the police division’s assertion mentioned.
In 2021, whereas reflecting on his profession, the Birmingham Police Division quoted Stover as saying, “You reside proper, you deal with individuals proper, proper will comply with you.”

The Dallas County native was the valedictorian of his graduating class at Shiloh Excessive College in Selma in 1952. He joined the U.S. Military and have become a paratrooper first with the 82nd Airborne. Within the final 12 months of the Korean Conflict in 1952-53, he was with the 187th Airborne Regimental Fight Workforce, the information website reported.
