The Ministry of the Interior published this Tuesday, May 9 in the Diario de Centro América Agreement 251 – 2023 that authorizes the Traffic Department of the General Directorate of the National Civil Police to enforce the circulation conditions for the transport of cargo in the Palín – Escuintla highway.
As of May 1, 2023, the administration of the section went from private to public management, and since then the authorities have issued a series of requirements and limitations regarding the type of vehicles that may use it.
In the first provision, the authorities indicated that the passage of transport with six or more axles would be prohibited, for which reason operations were implemented on the route to inform pilots about the provisions.
Agreement 438 – 2023, published on April 27, established the restriction of cargo vehicles and their combinations equal to or greater than six axles.
However, days later the carriers reported that they had reached an agreement with the authorities to allow the passage of vehicles with more axles.
Last Monday, the authorities issued an agreement establishing that cargo transport with six or more axles may use the highway, once they comply with the weight provisions established in the Regulation for the Control of Weights and Dimensions of Vehicles of Cargo, published in Agreement 379 – 2010, issued on December 23, 2010.
The authorities determined that the General Directorate of Roads must “install, maintain, operate and manage the activities of control of weights and dimensions of vehicles through fixed weighing control stations and mobile scale operations.”
With the provision issued this Tuesday, it is established that “the Traffic Department of the General Directorate of the National Civil Police must comply with agreement 438 – 2023, reformed by agreement 452 – 2023, through which circulation is restricted. of cargo vehicles whose weight and dimensions exceed the limits established in the Regulation for Weight and Dimensions Control of Motor Cargo Vehicles and their Combinations”.
In addition to compliance with weight restrictions, the Traffic Department of the General Directorate of the National Civil Police will verify that transport circulates in the right lane and that they comply with speed limits.
It is also established that they will verify that buses and minibuses circulate with access and emergency doors closed, “in order to safeguard the life and road safety of users of the section.”
