Former Attorney General Bill Barr called former President Trump a “consummate narcissist,” adding that the former president regularly “behaves recklessly.”
“But the fact is that he is a consummate narcissist and is constantly engaged in reckless behavior that endangers his political followers and the conservative and Republican agenda,” Barr said on CBS’s “Face the Nation” Sunday.
Barr, who served as attorney general under Trump, described the former president as always putting his own interests above all else, including those of the nation. He also said Trump’s conduct, described in the federal indictment against him, was “not an isolated example.”
“If he were back in the White House, he would always put his own interests and satisfying his own ego above everything else, including the interests of the country,” Barr said. “There’s no doubt about it. This is a perfect example of that.”
“He is a very petty person who will always put his interests before the country’s, his personal satisfaction of his ego, but our country cannot be a therapy session for a man with problems like this,” he added.
Barr is one of several former Trump administration officials who have broken with the former president over an indictment that includes 37 charges of mishandling classified documents and obstruction of justice.
Trump pleaded not guilty to the charges, which included later attempts to withhold those documents, including some of the country’s most sensitive materials, from the government. Trump and his allies have maintained that the charges against the former president were politically motivated, with Trump claiming he did nothing wrong by seizing those documents.
Barr said on Sunday that the Justice Department had “no choice but to look for those documents.” Barr has also previously said that this is one “damn” indictment against Trump, saying the former president was “wrong” to bring those classified documents.
