Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan cast his vote in the presidential and parliamentary elections on Sunday.
“The voting process is going on smoothly across the country. Citizens in the earthquake region are also voting with great enthusiasm. Speaking to reporters after playing the game in Üsküdar, Erdoğan said, “We did not encounter any problems in that region either.
He wished “a good future for our country and Turkish democracy”.
Erdogan said, “It is very important in terms of showing the strength of Turkish democracy,” and urged all citizens to vote without hesitation.
As the presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey started at 08:00 local time (0500GMT) on Sunday, millions of voters began to go to the polls.
More than 64.1 million people signed up to vote, including more than 1.76 million people who voted abroad and 4.9 million first-time voters.
A total of 191,885 ballot boxes were opened for voters in the country.
Each voter will cast two votes, one for the president and one for the parliamentarians who will serve for five years.
Voters will choose between President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who wants to be re-elected, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the main opposition candidate, and Sinan Ogan.
Another presidential candidate, Muharrem İnce, withdrew from the race on Thursday.
More than 30 political parties and more than 150 independent parliamentary candidates will compete in the elections.
There are five competing multi-party blocs: the People’s Alliance, the Nation’s Alliance, the Ancestral Alliance, the Labor and Freedom Alliance, and the Alliance of Socialist Forces.
