June 18 (Reuters) – Ukrainian forces have destroyed a “significant” munitions depot near the Russian-occupied port city of Henichesk in the southern Kherson region, Serhiy Bratchuk, spokesman for the Odessa military administration, said on Sunday.

“Our forces delivered a heavy blow – and a very hard one – in the village of Rykove, Henichesk district, in the temporarily occupied territory of the Kherson region in the morning,” Bratchuk said in a morning video message on Sunday.

“There was a very important ammunition depot. It has been destroyed.”

Reuters could not independently verify the information. There was no immediate comment from Russia on the alleged attack.

Ukrainian media posted videos of a huge plume of smoke rising far on the horizon with sounds of explosions.

Rykove is about 20 km (12 mi) from Henichesk, a port city on the Sea of Azov in southern Ukraine that has been occupied by the Kremlin since the early days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. (Reporting by Lidia Kelly in Melbourne; Editing by Lincoln Feast)
