The U-20 World Cup closed this Sunday with the first title in the category for Uruguay thanks to a header by Luciano Rodríguez in the 86th minute, which gave Celeste victory over Italy at the Único de La Plata stadium.
The consecration came in the third final played by La Celeste and in a very special setting: with a stadium packed with nearly 40,000 fans, and of these some 30,000 came from Uruguay.
On the contrary, the Azzurra lost the first final after having reached this final instance for the first time that resisted them after falling in the semifinals of 2017 and 2019 against teams that later took the trophy home.
1. URUGUAY WORLD CHAMPION UNDER-20 FOR THE FIRST TIME
After playing two finals in the Uruguay category, they qualified for their third U-20 World Cup final and won it in a match in which they were always in the lead and in which they did not let the Italians react.
The third time was the charm: After losing in the last game in Malaysia 1997 and Turkey 2013, Celeste won with a goal from Luciano Rodríguez, a game in which they dominated from start to finish and won the title at the Estadio Único Diego Armando Maradona.
2. A NEW WORLD UNDER-20 CHAMPION
After the twenty-third version of the FIFA U-20 World Cup, 12 countries have won the trophy.
Argentina, with six titles (1979, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2005, 2007) leads the record, followed by Brazil’s five championships (1983, 1985, 1993, 2003, 2011). Portugal has twice won the event (1989-1991) as has Serbia (1987-2015) (the first one was won as Yugoslavia but Serbia became the heir to Yugoslavia’s historic results according to FIFA).
With a title appear Spain (1999), Ghana (2009), Germany (1981), France (2013), England (2017), Ukraine (2019) and the Soviet Union (1977) and now Uruguay (2023) is added to that list ).

3. ISRAEL DEFEATS SOUTH KOREA AND ACHIEVES THE BRONZE MEDAL
The Israel team climbed to the last place on the podium of the U-20 World Cup after beating South Korea 3-1 in the match for third place, played in the city of La Plata.
Ran Binyamin, Omer Senior and Anan Khalaili sealed with their goals the victory of a team that had never participated in a World Cup of this category and ended up making history.
4. A WORLD CUP WITH 152 GOALS
After the World Cup and all 52 games played, 152 goals were scored, for an average of 2.92 per game.
On this Sunday’s day, five scores were converted for an average of 2.5 per commitment.

.5. CASADEI, MAXIMUM GUNNER, SAVIOLA CONTINUES WITH THE RECORD
The captain of Italy Césare Casadei achieved the golden spoils of the World Cup with seven goals.
Behind Casadei were the Brazilian Marcos Leonardo, who finished the competition with 5 goals; and the Colombian Oscar Cortés, third with 4 goals.
For his part, the Argentine Javier Saviola continues to hold the title of top scorer in all the U-20 tournaments played, with 11 goals scored in the 2001 edition.
