The State Department confirmed Tuesday that US Navy veteran Trevor Reed was wounded while fighting in Ukraine.

Spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters that Reed was later transferred to Germany, where he received medical care by a nonprofit.

The State Department continued to emphasize that Americans should not go to Ukraine for any reason, including participating in conflicts there, because of “significant risks, including capture, death or physical harm.”

“Mr. Reed has not taken any action on behalf of the US government. And as I have stated, we have been incredibly clear warning American citizens not to go to Ukraine, let alone join the war,” Patel said.

“We are not in a position to provide assistance to evacuate private US aid from Ukraine, including Americans who may decide to join Ukraine.

The exact circumstances surrounding Reed’s injury remain unclear, including the extent of his injuries and where he was fought.

The first news site to report on the subject was Messenger. He said Reed was injured two weeks ago when he stepped on a landmine and received shrapnel wounds.

Reed was a high-profile American prisoner in Russia until he was released in 2022 as part of a prisoner swap facilitated by Turkey that ended his three-year detention. Reed was replaced by Russian citizen Konstantin Yaroshenko, who was imprisoned in the United States on charges of drug trafficking.

Yaroshenko was arrested in Liberia in 2010 on drug trafficking charges and extradited to the United States, where he is serving a 20-year sentence.
