In 2021, College students Deserve, a progressive grassroots scholar group advocating for the abolition of police in faculties, pressured the LAUSD and the college board to divest cash from the Los Angeles College District Police. 

The group argued the presence of cops on faculty campuses usually led to the criminalization of scholars, significantly these from Black and brown communities, and contributed to a hostile and intimidating surroundings that hindered studying.

“We would like faculties to divest from criminalization and policing,” the College students Deserve web site states. “We would like faculties to spend money on us as Black, Muslim, undocumented, indigenous, and queer youth in poor and dealing class communities of coloration. Many College students Deserve representatives will seem at board conferences, Palma mentioned, and urge members to not make investments funds within the faculty’s police division. 

“They have been the group that helped to create the scenario within the first place,” Palma mentioned. “They’re the group that the board listens to, and they also proceed to oppose what the dad and mom need.”

The varsity board voted unanimously in February 2021 to eliminate officers stationed in faculties and already rejected a decision in September 2021 that might have reinstated police.

“This isn’t a query of whether or not or not the district has funds to completely fund a functioning police division to securely patrol our faculties and to have officers assigned on our campuses,” Palma mentioned. “It’s a political assertion to appease the defund the police motion.”
