To fight
Russia’s defense ministry said two of its military commanders were killed in eastern Ukraine as Kiev forces renewed their efforts to break through Russian defenses in the embattled city of Bakhmut. A Russian “raid party” consisting of a Su-34 fighter-bomber, a Su-35 fighter and two Mi-8 helicopters was shot down before entering the territory of Ukraine.
Diplomacy
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Berlin will support Ukraine as long as it takes. “I have said it many times and I repeat it here today: we will support you as long as it is necessary,” Scholz said at a joint press conference with visiting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Zelensky, meanwhile, said Kiev and its Western supporters could make a Russian defeat in the Ukraine war “irreversible” as early as this year. G7 leaders plan to tighten sanctions against Russia at their summit in Japan this week, with moves targeting energy and exports in support of Moscow’s war effort, officials with direct knowledge of the discussions said.
Staff
Germany announced additional military aid to Ukraine worth nearly $3 billion, including tanks, anti-aircraft systems and ammunition. France said it will send dozens of armored vehicles and light tanks, including the AMX-10RC’s combat vehicles, to Ukraine in the coming weeks. The European Union must speed up ammunition supplies to Ukraine as the country’s armed forces need 1,000 artillery shells every day in the Bakhmut area alone, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said.
