Kentucky Derby winner Mage wore a rag on his nose that became covered in mud during his run at Churchill Downs on Saturday. After the race he still had it on in the Winner’s Circle.

So what was that thing?

Apparently it’s something like one Breathe-Right strip for horses.

According to Flair’s website, a stripping company which advertises its product as a drug-free way to “promote optimal health for equine athletes”.

But a 2020 report from ABC News said that while the comics were all the rage at the 2019 Breeder’s Cup, their popularity was waningand not everyone was sold on their effectiveness.

At the same time, more states allowed the strips to be used on racetracks. Kentucky was one of the first states to allow them, ABC reported.

In 2014, California Chrome wore the strips when he won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, and there was one discuss whether he could wear one in Belmont Park in an attempt for the Triple Crown. Eventually, New York officials changed their policies to allow them.

The strip Mage wore during the Kentucky Derby Saturday was printed with a logo for MagnaWave.

MagnaWave shared a photo of the Derby winner wearing the strip in a Facebook post, saying that Mage uses MagnaWave “on a daily basis and we gave him some nose strips that he happened to be wearing at the Derby.”

MagnaWave is a Louisville-based wellness company that offers “pulsed electromagnetic field” equipment for use on livestock and pets.

“MagnaWave machines have a unique electric current that runs through a copper coil that creates a pulsating magnetic field,” the company’s website states.

For racehorses, the company says the machine “helps a horse with the post-workout routine by aiding recovery and reducing pain associated with muscle tension and lactic acid buildup.
