President Biden’s administration celebrated Lesbian Visibility Week at the White House press briefing on Tuesday, with guests declaring Biden the “most pro-LGBTQI president in our history.”
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre welcomed the cast and creators of the TV shows “The L Word” and “Generation Q,” which focus on lesbian and LGBT stories. Jean-Pierre and her guests denounced “MAGA extremists” for their alleged attacks on LGBT groups and civil rights legislation.
“This week is Lesbian Visibility Week, and as the first openly queer person to hold the position of Press Secretary to the President of the United States, I see every day how important visibility and representation are,” Jean-Pierre began, as he showed actresses Jennifer welcomed. Beals, Leisha Hailey and Katherine Moennig and co-creator Ilene Chaiken.
“As a young, queer woman of color, I felt alone and invisible at times,” said Jean-Pierre. “For so many people in our community, the impact of ‘The L Word’ cannot be underestimated (sic). It’s incredibly important to see different stories that reflect our lives. It’s important that young people have characters on television and in the books see who they can relate to, and whose life stories and identity inspire them to reach their highest potential.”

Jean-Pierre went on to say that LGBT people are facing “relentless attacks from some Republicans across the country”. She condemned the ban on certain LGBT-oriented books, as well as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ so-called “don’t say gay” law.
“MAGA extremists want to reverse the visibility and progress that we fought so hard for,” said Jean-Pierre.

Jean-Pierre then handed over the stage to Chaiken, who praised the president wholeheartedly.
“We are honored to stand here today alongside the first lesbian press secretary in our history, serving the most pro-LGBTQI president in our history,” Chaiken began. “We are painfully aware that our struggle is far from over. We are facing new threats against our community, from online harassment to legal acts of violence, to actual physical violence.”
“They may try to erase our stories from classrooms and libraries, but we are here. We are here today – at the White House – and we will not be erased. We will remain visible, empowered, engaged, contributing, creative, loving American citizens,” she continued, thanking Biden for his leadership on the matter.
The White House hosted actresses from the TV shows “Generation Q” and “The L Word” on Tuesday in honor of Lesbian Visibility Week.
After the actresses left, Jean-Pierre went on to answer questions about Biden’s newly announced 2024 presidential campaign. Biden’s age, 80, has been a major concern for voters entering the campaign season.
