A fatal accident Sunday night involving at least half a dozen vehicles nearly closed both sides of Interstate 10 in Upland while emergency responders tended to the injured and authorities investigated what happened.

One person died at the scene and another person with life-threatening injuries had to be extricated from a badly damaged vehicle, said Chris Gorman, incident commander for the San Bernardino County Fire Department. That person and two others with minor injuries were taken to the trauma ward at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center.

Other people with possible injuries were treated or interviewed at the scene and refused to go to the hospital.

Initial reports indicated that as many as 10 vehicles were involved in the accident, but some of those may have had minor damage or belonged to witnesses or those who stopped to help, Gorman said. Five or six vehicles had occupants with possible injuries.

The deceased drove alone. Further information about that person was not immediately available.

The accident first appeared in the official California Highway Patrol log shortly after 8 p.m. The message at 8:08 p.m. said all lanes had closed, with no further details. The incident commander said the highway was not completely closed, but traffic was significantly hindered as only one lane was open in each direction for an extended period of time.

The coroner was called at 9:19pm and a SigAlert was issued at 9:32pm – documenting a major closure

Shortly before 10 p.m., firefighters said the injured had been transferred for treatment and the crime scene was handed over to highway patrol for further investigation.
