An inmate stabbed two correctional deputies in the hands and shoulders on Sunday night during an unprovoked attack at Santa Clara County Main Penitentiary in San Jose, officials said.
The prisoner left his cell in Module 6B at 7:22 p.m. and attacked the two deputies with a prison-made knife, the The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office reports this in a press release. The attack led to a fight on the ground, where the two deputies were able to restrain the detainee with the help of other deputies, officials said.
The prisoner was identified only as a man in custody and charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and rape. Officials declined to release information about the weapon used by the detainee, citing security concerns.
The sheriff’s office will likely recommend attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon against the inmate, according to Sgt. Russell Davis. He added that the decision will be made by the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office.
“This attack serves as a stark reminder of the risks our deputies face on a daily basis,” Sheriff Robert Jonsen said in a statement. “I’m proud of these dedicated deputies who risk their lives and safety every day.”
The two deputies were taken to a hospital, according to Davis, where they were treated for moderate wounds. A deputy sheriff suffered a two-inch-long and two-inch-deep stab wound, Davis said.
The deputies have been released from the hospital.
The detainee was not injured and did not require medical attention, Davis said.
Homicide detectives and crime scene detectives assist in the investigation.
