Firefighters were still battling the flames on Thursday.
Two firefighters were killed Wednesday night fighting a fire aboard a freighter docked in Newark, New Jersey, officials said.
Newark Fire Chief Rufus Jackson confirmed the deaths at a news conference early Thursday, a few hours after announcing that two firefighters were being searched at the scene.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka told reporters that firefighters are still putting out the flames.
Firefighters were dispatched to the Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal around 9:30 p.m. ET after receiving a report of multiple vehicles on fire aboard a vessel called the Grande Coaster Eadoirio. They managed to put out most of the fire, but the flames had spread to multiple levels of the ship, according to Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Frage.
The United States Coast Guard also responded to the fire, describing the vessel as a “roll on/roll off freighter” in a Twitter post.
