A miracle in the jungle is how Colombians describe the discovery on Friday of four indigenous children who survived 40 days in the Amazon jungle after their plane crashed.

The plane malfunctioned and crashed while the boys were flying from Araracuara in the Amazonas state to San Jose del Guaviare in southeast Colombia on May 1. Three adults died, including the children’s mother.

The little ones began to wander through the forest in search of help. Operation Hope, which will be an intense search by the army, has begun.

Search commandos used different strategies to find the children, even broadcasting a message recorded by their grandmother in their native language, telling them to stay in place.

For more than a month, the commandos followed the clues left by the children: a bottle, child-size footprints in the mud, fruit that looked like bitten, and a diaper.

The three members of the team belong to an indigenous group that knows the ins and outs of the hostile forest where the children are trapped.

Lesly Jacobombaire Mucutuy, 13; Soleiny Jacobombaire Mucutuy, 9; Tien Noriel Ronoque Mucutuy, 4; and Cristin Neriman Ranoque Mucutuy, just 11 months old, showed signs of thirst, malnutrition, and infection.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro expressed his happiness on Twitter.

“A joy for the whole country! “Four children who were lost in the Colombian jungles 40 days ago have been found alive,” he said.
