Authorities say four people were shot Saturday during a funeral procession in a west Chicago suburb.

The shooting occurred around 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, in a suburb of Oak Park, Illinois, according to the Oak Park Police Department.

“The incident is believed to have targeted members of the procession without any impact on bystanders,” police wrote in a Twitter post.

Authorities said in a press release that the funeral procession was heading west when a white pickup truck pulled up next to one of the vehicles in the procession and began firing. No bystanders were shot in the incident.

Police said two individuals were beaten and transported to Loyola Medical Center. One of the individuals is in critical condition, while the other victims are in critical but stable condition, police said.

Oak Park Police Chief Shatonya Johnson said that while there is no longer a threat to the community, gun violence “has no place in our community”.

“While there is no evidence of any further threat to the community from this incident, any act of gun violence such as this seriously damages our collective sense of security,” Police Chief Shatonya Johnson said in a press release. “It is our job as law enforcement officers to bring to justice the person or persons responsible for this crime to make it clear that senseless gun violence has no place in our community or any community.”

Police officials say standard protocol is for funeral homes to alert law enforcement along the route of potentially high-risk funeral processions so officers can assist with traffic flow and the safety of attendees. Authorities said they were not warned of potential danger prior to the procession.
