At least five people were flown to hospital on Thursday after part of an elevated walkway collapsed in a beachside town in Texas.

It happened Thursday afternoon in Surfside Beach, a small town on the Gulf of Mexico about 60 miles south of downtown Houston.

Surfside Beach Volunteer Fire Department assistant chief Justin Mills said at least five victims were flown in helicopters for medical care and the total number of injured was about 10.

Five people have been taken to a hospital by helicopter after a walkway collapse in Surfside Beach, Texas.

Mills said he didn’t know the condition of anyone who was injured. He did not know the ages of the victims, but said they appeared to be teenagers.

The Surfside Beach Fire Department responded to a call at 12:34 a.m., Mills said. The department was instructed to set up a landing zone for hospital helicopters.

Aerial video from TV station KTRK showed that the walkway appears to be made of wood and leads to a building.
