Eight people died this Sunday in the town of Brownsville, in the southern US and next to the border with Mexico, after a car ran over a group at a bus stop near a shelter for the homeless and migrants.

According to the authorities’ report, at least six other people were injured, some of them seriously.

Police arrested the driver and said they are investigating whether it was an accident or an intentional act.

Police Officer Martin Sandoval of the Brownsville Police Department told local media that the driver had been taken to the hospital for treatment and drug and alcohol testing.

The director of the San Pedro Ozanam shelter, Víctor Maldonado, told the Associated Press news agency that most of the victims were Venezuelan men.

And he recounted that the security cameras showed a van that “went through the light that was about a hundred feet away and ran over the people who were sitting there at the bus stop.”

Maldonado noted that the center houses between 250 and 300 people per day including migrants and the homeless, but at the time it was empty.
