MIDWEST TOWN, Oklahoma — A man shot and killed a 20-year-old student Monday at Rose State College in Oklahoma, according to police, who reported no other injuries after the campus was briefly locked down.
Midwest City police chief Sid Porter said the suspect surrendered when approached by officers following the shooting near the center of the 13,000-student campus. The two-year college is located just outside of Oklahoma City.
In a statement, police identified the suspect as Brandon Morrissette, 30, who is charged with first-degree murder. It was not immediately clear whether he had a lawyer on Monday evening.
Porter said the victim and Morrissette’s wife, who is also a student at Rose State College, were walking out of a building when confronted by the gunman. The victim, whom police did not immediately identify, was pronounced dead at the scene. Porter has not provided any other details about what may have led to the shooting.
Kevin McCormack, a college student from suburban Choctaw, said he met a friend on campus when he heard gunshots. He said they turned around and saw a man slammed to the ground, next to another man with a gun and a woman trying to calm him down.
“Almost immediately we said, ‘Go, go, go!’ and left,” McCormack said.
Rose State College canceled classes for the rest of the day after lifting the lockdown order.
Porter said the first officers arrived on the scene in about a minute. He praised students and staff for how they reacted during the lockdown, noting that Rose State College had practiced what to do in the event of an active shooter weeks before the shooting.
“Things were locked down very quickly,” Porter said. “I just think they did a great job listening to the school and everyone lay down and not freak out because we didn’t know what was going on.”
