Inequality is believed to be an important aspect in recognizing cooperative partners and therefore crucial to the evolution of humanity.

A 2017 study by scientists at the University of Vienna’s Messerli Research Institute found that domestic dogs display a limited form of inequality aversion, responding to reward.

It had been proposed that this primitive form of aversion was due to inequity during domestication.

Alternatively, though, the wolves do cooperate with each other. However, they are just as averse to inequality as domestic dogs.

The study found that both were inequality averse if their partner was rewarded, but not themselves for the same action.

At the same time, it is known that wolves tend to reconcile after they fight with each other, however dogs do not forget.

Perhaps domestication has to do with this, since dogs live in a human environment, while wolves live in packs, the study says.

For the wolf pack, conflict resolution is important for survival.
