After the capture of Francisco Oropesa, the main suspect in the shooting in Texas (United States) that last weekend claimed the lives of five Hondurans, local authorities held a press conference.
“They can now be more calm because this individual is behind bars (…) He is going to spend a long time behind bars for having killed these five people,” said San Jacinto County (Texas) Sheriff Greg Capers. And he added that he was discovered hiding in a closet after a citizen tipped off the FBI.
For his part, a representative of the FBI expressed: “I want to say first of all to the victims, we have them in our minds and that the suspect has been apprehended. The tip was received through an FBI hotline. We want to thank the person who had the courage to call to report the whereabouts of the suspect.”
He also thanked the members of the FBI and the officers who worked tirelessly to capture Francisco Oropesa and bring him to justice.
Meanwhile, the Houston Sheriff’s Service representative said it was a heinous crime for the community and the country. They also reported that a woman was arrested along with Oropesa, of whom they did not give details.
Oropesa faces five counts of murder and is being held on $5 million bail. He is a 38-year-old citizen of Mexican nationality.
On Friday night he was shooting with his semi-automatic rifle in the garden of his house in the Texas town of Cleveland when one of his neighbors approached him and asked him to stop making noise because it was very late and the family, including some children I couldn’t fall asleep.
The man responded by breaking into his neighbors’ home to shoot them in the neck and head, as if it were an “execution,” according to the police report.
Inside the house there were 10 people and five lost their lives. The names of the deceased are Daniel Enrique Lazo, 9 years old; Sonia Argentina Guzman, 25; Diana Velasquez Alvarado, 21; Obdulia Molina Rivera, 31, and José Jonathan Cáceres, 18 years old.
Diana Velásquez had permanent residence in the US, while the rest were in the country irregularly. According to US authorities, Oropesa had been deported to Mexico at least four times since 2009.
The persecution, which lasted for four days, involved more than 200 agents from different security agencies.
