Bautista arose from the crossing of 18 different varieties within a genetic improvement program that INTA Cerro Azul de Misiones began in 2012. The objective was to achieve a higher quality, healthier and more yielding maize, at a low cost, adapted to the region. , with better agronomic attributes, whose seed could be used in the following campaign by the 10,000 producers, mostly small, who sow the grass in the province.
According to what the INTA specialists who led the research team, Adrián de Lucía and Silvina Fariza, told Clarín Rural in Cerro Azul, it is an open-pollinated, non-transgenic, subtropical maize with an intermediate cycle of 120 days from planting to maturity. Physiological, it has a height of 2.5 meters with a spike insertion at 1 meter, a yield between 6,000 to 9,000 kilos in rocky soils, red dent grain with 16 average rows, a weight of 1000 grains of 300 grams, greater coverage chala, good cane, better behavior against diseases and abiotic factors, and higher protein content (11.2% versus 8.5%) than the commercial hybrids currently used in the area. The latter take 170 to 180 days to maturity, reach 3 meters in height with an ear of 2 meters and have a yield ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 kilos per hectare.
