Covid is no longer a global public health emergency, the World Health Organization said on Friday. The WHO issued the statement more than three years ago, on January 30, 2020.
WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he made the decision on the recommendation of the WHO’s emergency committee, which met for its 15th time on Thursday.
“I took that advice,” Tedros said. “It is therefore with great hope that I declare Covid-19 a global health emergency.”
“For more than a year now, the pandemic has been on a downward trend, with population immunity through vaccination and infection increasing, mortality rates decreasing and pressure on health systems easing. This trend allows most countries to return to life as we knew it before Covid-19,” Tedros said on Friday.
However, he noted that one person died of Covid every three minutes worldwide last week — a figure that only includes reported deaths.
“The worst thing a country can do right now is use this news as a reason to let its guard down, dismantle the systems it has built or send the message to its people that Covid-19 is nothing to worry about. to make.” Tedros said.
This is an evolving story.
