Renewable energies are having an increasingly important participation in the Argentine energy scenario, according to data from the Compañía Administradora del Mercado Mayorista Eléctrico Sociedad Anónima (CAMMESA) they already supply 14% of the demand of the Wholesale Electricity Market (MEM).

“In the year 2022, a total of 418 GWh of biogas was produced in Argentina, that is, 11% more compared to the previous year. An interesting aspect to highlight, and which can be seen in the graph, is that the production of this energy , even in years of the Covid-19 pandemic, has not stopped growing in recent periods,” the report indicates, detailing that the province of Córdoba in particular, since 2017 has begun to produce in larger quantities. The province’s participation increased over time, reaching 22% of the country’s total generation in 2022.
In this way, Córdoba is positioned as the second producing province, since Buenos Aires is in first place with a 46% participation in the total production, which translates into 190 GWh of biogas production during 2022, while in Third place is Santa Fe with 18% participation, that is, about 76 GWh.
According to data from the Ministry of Economy and the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET) in Córdoba there are 19 plants that produce biogas (some of them have not yet begun to operate as they are in the construction phase), 32% of the plants are located in the department of Río Cuarto.
“The inputs used in the process are varied, but the most common include pig effluents, industrial and agricultural by-products, corn silage, manure, refrigerator residues and vinasse, among others,” says the Cordovan Stock Exchange report.
The entity concludes that “biogas presents a valuable opportunity for the development of alternative energy sources, since it can have various purposes, such as the generation of electrical and thermal energy, to treat industrial and agricultural water or even as fertilizers for the fields “.
And he adds: “Agribusiness has a leading role in this scenario, since this fuel can be produced from disposable material, thus solving problems with waste and transforming it into energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and producing a more sustainable way.
