A six-year-old boy in Langkawi who wanted to buy a toy car sneaked out of the house with his younger brother on Tuesday evening and drove his parents’ car to the store.

He drove for about 2.5 km before losing control and crashing into a lamp post near Kampung Titi Chanwang.

The boy suffered a cut on his chin, while his three-year-old brother was unharmed.

The car sustained damage to the hood.

Facebook user Muhamad Haji Noh, who witnessed the accident and posted a video about it online, chased the car the children were in, suspecting drink-driving.

He can be heard in the video saying, “The driver grazed my car near Ulu Melaka. We thought it was a drunk driver, so we gave chase. Where are his parents?”

The older boy repeatedly told Mr. Haji that he wanted to go to a shop and buy a black toy car.

Mr. Haji reacted in disbelief and said, “Who drove the car? Did this little boy drive the car?

Shariman Ashari, Langkawi police chief, said the district traffic police were notified of the accident at 11:15 pm.

“Investigations show that the boy from Kampung Padang Mengkuang was driving the car without his parents’ knowledge before it crashed at the roadside in Jalan Bukit Tangga,” Assistant Commissioner Shariman said.

He added that the boys left their house while their father slept and their mother went to the toilet.
