Kenya will partner with South Korea on vaccine and drug production, with both countries exchanging technology, health financing, management information systems and health product security.

This announcement was made at a meeting held today at Afya House in Nairobi where Cabinet Secretary for Health, Nakhumicha A. Wafula, along with Baringo County Governor HE Benjamin Cheboi.

Last year, CS Wafula visited Seoul, South Korea, where she visited SK Biosciences, an international company that produces vaccines. She also met with the International Vaccine Institute (IVI), where Kenya formally applied for admission as a state party.

Kenya is currently setting up the Kenya Biovax Institute, which will be tasked with producing vaccines and other medicines locally. The country signed an agreement with Exim Bank last year to provide financial opportunities to those interested in producing vaccines and pharmaceuticals.

At the meeting, Governor Cheboi pleaded with the Korean government to provide employment opportunities for young people graduating from health training institutions in his province.

This partnership between Kenya and South Korea will give a major boost to the country’s health sector, as the local production of vaccines and medicines not only reduces costs, but also ensures their availability, especially in the remote areas.
