Indiana police shot at by man in Motel 6 bed

Indiana police have released dramatic body camera footage of an officer-involved shooting at a Motel 6 while attempting to serve warrants for two people Tuesday morning.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Department said they arrived at Motel 6 in Anderson, Indiana about 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 16, to issue arrest warrants for Brooke Badger, 35, and Jon Niccum, 47.

Authorities said Badger was wanted for felony work release and parole violations, while Niccum was wanted for felony work release violations and escape.

The body camera footage shows police knocking at the door of the motel, identifying themselves as the “front desk.” Badger opens the motel room door and is led away by the police.

Another deputy ventured into the motel room where Niccum was hiding in the covers of one of the queen size beds.

“What’s the problem?” Niccum is heard asking the officer.

The officer demands that the suspect show his hands and sees a bright flashlight shining at the bed.

“Show me your hands,” you hear the officer say repeatedly. “Straight away.”

Seemingly out of nowhere, the body cam footage shows Niccum pull out a gun and shoot at the officer.

The officer is seen scrambling away yelling, “Shot fired, shot fired.”

No officers were shot during the exchange, and police said Niccum ran into the bathroom.

In the bathroom, they found Niccum dead “from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” police said. An autopsy will be performed on Niccum in the coming days.

As the bullets were fired at deputies, authorities said Badger ran away from the motel on foot and police are still looking for her.
