LONDON

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday sought guidance from his ethics adviser on whether the country’s interior minister had violated the rules by asking for a special speed awareness course to be held after he was caught speeding.

Caught speeding in 2022, Suella Braverman faced a fine and the possibility of losing three points on her license or taking a speed awareness course as part of a group.

According to British media, his behavior is primarily being scrutinized not for the speeding crime itself, but for the civil service’s processing of a one-on-one speed awareness course request.

“I got a speeding ticket, I paid the fine, I got the points. Nothing undesirable happened to me,” Braverman said on television.

Labor leader Keir Starmer urged Sunak to immediately launch a formal investigation into whether Braverman violated ministerial law and said he should resign if the investigation confirms the violation.

The Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) also accused Sunak of applying a “double standard” on Braverman.

“How many more lives will Rishi Sunak give him? That’s a double standard. If he was a member of PCS, he wouldn’t have expected such tolerance,” PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said in a statement.

“Suella Braverman is quick to criticize government officials when it comes to her work, but she is even quicker to ask for help when she needs it.

Last October, while serving under short-lived Prime Minister Liz Truss, Braverman was forced to resign for sharing an official document in his personal email, which is a violation of the rules. However, Truss’s successor Altar reappointed him just six days later.
