The author of The Outsider, Prince Mashele, has apologized unreservedly for denying that his book was funded by Herman Mashaba. This comes after he went on the defensive regarding Herman Mashaba’s biography.
After falsely claiming in numerous interviews that he had not received funding from Mashaba, an apology came a day later and he was not required by law to disclose to Jonathan Ball Publishers the R12.5 million budget he received .
“While I was bound by a duty of confidentiality, I accept that I should not have said that Mr. Herman Mashaba had no part in financing the book”. Mashele said in a statement on Wednesday.
“The correct fact is that the research leading to the production of the book was funded through a funding agreement with Mr. Mashaba, to whom I am eternally grateful. I apologize to Mr. Mashaba, who has since been associated with the controversy through no fault of his own.”
After an interview in which he falsely stated that he financed all his books from his own resources. Mashele, known as a political commentator, also apologized to TV personality JJ Tabane
After admitting guilt, Jonathan Ball pulled Mashele’s book from shelves Monday for failing to disclose his financial ties to Mashaba. He said he appreciated the professionalism of it and then thanked him.
“I would also like to thank Jonathan Ball Publishers for, despite their disapproval of my funding secrecy, they still insisted that ‘the manuscript submitted to us withstood scrutiny’. The statement he made was read.
“I appreciate the publisher’s professionalism in my interaction with them.”
