The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, has said that in the coming weeks there will be a “clear decision” on the situation in the north of Kosovo.
Macron said that they agreed on such a thing during the meetings with the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, and the local leaders – the president of Kosovo, Vjosa Osman, and the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić.
Osmani and Vuçiqi have held separate meetings with European leaders, on the sidelines of the European Political Community summit in the Moldovan capital, Chisinau.
Osmani wrote on Twitter that he discussed the latest developments in Kosovo and “our joint efforts for peace, security and stability” with the leaders of Germany and France.
Addressing reporters in Chisinau on the sidelines of the European Political Committee summit, Vučić said that reducing tensions in northern Kosovo and establishing guarantees to avoid unilateral actions were the main topics during his meetings with Macron and Scholz.
Vuçiqi also emphasized the importance that the establishment of the Association of municipalities with a Serbian majority in Kosovo has for him.
He added that a lasting compromise solution is needed.
“We have to convince people in the Balkans that compromise is not a bad thing. It is not easy, everyone is radicalized and no one wants to listen to normal ideas”, said Vucic.
The meetings took place on the sidelines of the European Political Community summit in the Moldovan capital, Chisinau, where the High Representative of the European Union, Josep Borrell, is also participating.
“I emphasized that it is of priority importance that the institutions in Pristina stop the violence and return to the dialogue”, said Vuçiqi, after the meeting with Borrell.
The Office of the Presidency of Kosovo announced that Osmani also met with Borrell.
The Serbian leader also stated that the Kosovo delegation did not want to meet with the Serbian delegation in Moldova.
“It was not approved by other leaders. Serbia always wants talks and it seems to me that now it is clearer who is responsible for the violence in Kosovo”, Vucic told reporters.
The Kosovar side has not confirmed that it has rejected the meeting.
Asked when he expects a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, Vucic said that he does not know.
The summit in Moldova is being held at a time of tension in the north of Kosovo. The situation in this part became tense as early as May 26, when the Kosovo Police helped the Albanian mayors of municipalities with a Serbian majority to enter the municipal offices, despite the resistance of the local residents.
On May 29, clashes between Serbian protesters opposing the mayors and KFOR soldiers in Zvecan left 30 soldiers injured, as well as dozens of protesters.
NATO has said that it is ready to send even more troops to Kosovo to calm the violence in the north of the country, inhabited by a majority of Serbs, the head of the alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, said on Thursday.
He added that the first 700 reinforcement troops are already on their way to Kosovo.
The new Albanian mayors of the municipalities of North Mitrovica, Zveçan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq have emerged from the extraordinary elections of April 23, which were boycotted by the Serbian community.
