Its sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, earned $20 million over the weekend, making it the second-largest animated IMAX global opening in history, according to film industry magazine Boxoffice Pro.
The highly anticipated sequel to a 2018 blockbuster superhero snatched $13.5 million in domestic IMAX theaters, or 11.2% of the U.S. market, the magazine said on Monday.
Boxoffice Pro said in a statement that the film made $6.5 million overseas, which included $2.7 million in China, or 16.5% of the movie’s Chinese box office, showing on just 1% of screens.
But the animation is The Super Mario Bros., which opened in April and earned $21.6 million on its opening weekend. It fell short of beating the movie.
“The incredible market share we’ve seen recently in animated movies – in some cases double our historical average with animated releases – shows the growing demand for IMAX with new viewers,” IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond said in a statement.
IMAX uses 70-millimeter film, which is much larger than the standard 35-millimeter motion picture format, offering higher resolution on a larger screen and better sound than standard theaters.
Including standard theaters, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse opened for $120.5 million in the US alone over the weekend – this is its predecessor Spider-Man: Into the Spider, which made $35.3 million five years ago. -More than three times the Verse. at the opening.
The sequel, which grossed $88.1 million overseas, grossed $208.6 million worldwide in its opening weekend, according to Boxoffice Pro.
This total figure places the sequel on no. It added 52 points for the opening weekend of all time and number eight for the biggest animated opening weekend in history.
