Millions of people in New York City and other locations in the Northeast tried to stay clear of the smoky air throughout the day and evening.
The city skyline was barely visible for most of the day, and the smell of the smoke was strong as commuters reached the evening rush hour.
Major cities with the lowest air quality are New York City, Albany and Cincinnati, a map of Air nowa website that publishes air quality data.
According to weather forecasters, a large and dense plume of smoke will pass over parts of the northeast on Wednesday.
That batch of very dense smoke will drift down the northeast all day Wednesday, bringing some relief to New England and the Midwest.
