On June 7, 1862, the United States and England signed a treaty to end the slave trade.
The treaty gave each country the right to search the other country’s slave-smuggling merchant ships as they sailed through a certain area of the Pacific Ocean.
The treaty also established international courts in Sierra Leone, the Cape of Good Hope and New York to try smugglers.
By 1864, the slave trade from Africa had ended as a result of the Anglo-American treaty and the blockade of southern ports during the American Civil War.
