Taiwan on Thursday categorically denied being part of tripartite plans to share intelligence gathered by naval reconnaissance planes with the United States and Japan.
“The Department of Defense has not yet been informed of plans to share real-time data from navy reconnaissance aircraft with the US and Japan, as some media have reported,” Twitter said.
Taipei’s denial comes after reports suggesting that the island nation, which China sees as a “province of secession,” plans to use the upcoming MQ-9B Sea Guardian drones in this way.
According to the Financial Times, “The United States, Taiwan and Japan will share real-time data from maritime reconnaissance aircraft, according to four people familiar with the project, and this demonstrates Washington’s effort to strengthen coordination should China attack Taiwan.” reported.
However, the Ministry of Defense denied such allegations.
“We kindly request that due care be exercised in verifying the source of information in order not to mislead the public,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said the one-China principle is “a universally recognized fundamental norm in international relations, the prevailing consensus among the international community, and the political basis of China-US and China-Japan relations.”
Reiterating China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity over Taiwan, Wang said, “We are absolutely against any kind of military contact between the Taiwan region and countries that have diplomatic relations with China.”
We call on the countries concerned to abide by the one-China principle and stop creating elements that could cause tension in the Taiwan Strait. “China will resolutely protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said.
China on Thursday flew 37 military aircraft into the defense zone around Taiwan, which has insisted on its independence since 1949.
When asked about the entry of People’s Liberation Army jets into the area, Wang replied, “This is not a question about China’s foreign relations. Taiwan is part of China. We will never give up on our determination and determination to protect China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
