The suspect in the latest knife attack that injured six people in the French Alpine town of Annecy has been charged with “attempted murder”, the district attorney said on Saturday.
Annecy Prosecutor Line Bonnet-Mathis said at a press conference that the suspect, Abdelmasih H., appeared before two investigating judges in the morning.
Bonnet-Mathis said the suspect refused to speak to the judges.
It was stated that the injuries in the attack were not life-threatening, and the four injured children were being treated at the hospital.
The prosecutor reported that the suspect did not have alcohol or drugs in his blood, and that at the time of his detention he had a gun, two Christian paintings, a cross necklace, €480 ($516) and a Swede. Driving licence.
He said that the psychiatrist who examined Abdelmasih H. concluded that there was no obstacle for the suspect to testify, but that it was too early to determine whether he had a psychiatric pathology.
He added that the suspect is married and has a child.
Four children and two adults were injured in a knife attack on a playground in Annecy on Thursday.
French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said at a press conference that the attacker was a Syrian refugee who has been living in Sweden for 10 years and had sought asylum in France, where she was a homeless individual, in vain.
Borne also said the suspect had no police record.
He also noted that there was no apparent terrorist motive in the attack.
Among the injured were a 22-month-old child, two 2-year-olds and a 3-year-old baby. Two of the children were tourists – a Dutch and an Englishman.
