On Sunday, Kiev said at least six people were killed by flooding after Tuesday’s explosion at the Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine.
“46 settlements were actually submerged in Kherson Oblast… 2,718 people were evacuated, 190 of them children. Five people died. 35 people, including seven children, are thought to be missing, Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said on Facebook.
Klymenko also said that 31 settlements in the Mykolaiv region were flooded, one person died, and 982 people, 167 of whom were children, were evacuated.
“About 162,000 subscribers in 34 settlements have no water supply in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. Drinking and technical water supply continues. “Together with local authorities, we are looking for opportunities to provide citizens with a stable water supply.”
He added that the water is gradually decreasing in the flooded settlements, but the weather conditions have deteriorated with the rain reported in almost the entire Kherson region.
Separately, Andriy Yermak, Head of the Presidential Office of Ukraine, said in a statement that 6 people were injured while being evacuated from the left bank of the Kherson region as a result of the attack by the Russian forces.
Russian authorities have not yet responded to the statement.
Earlier this week, a state of emergency was declared on both sides of the Kakhovka dam in the Kherson region in southern Ukraine – one side controlled by Russia and the other by Ukraine.
Russia and Ukraine claimed responsibility for the explosion that destroyed part of the dam that supplied water to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant and to Crimea, which was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014.
