SUNGAI SIPUT, Perak – A group of wild elephants stormed into a rural school in the Malaysian state of Perak, causing damage to a building and facilities.

The incident took place at 02:00 on June 8 at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pos Perwor near Lasah, about 70 km from the state capital of Ipoh.

The elephants damaged the windows and grilles of classrooms and a kitchen, while nearby flower pots, banana and coconut palms were also destroyed.

Malaysian daily Sinar Harian reported that six elephants had entered the school grounds, citing the director of the State Department of Wildlife and National Parks of Peninsular Malaysia (Perhilitan), Yusoff Shariff.

However, Mr. Yusoff was not injured in the incident.

He said some members of the department’s Elephant Action Unit were sent to the site after receiving information.

“The elephants were chased back to the forest. They may have come out to look for food,” he said.

The incident was shared by Mohd Rassidee Mohd Rasid, Assistant District Education Officer of Kuala Kangsar, in a Facebook post.
