There are three main categories that help restoration contractors and insurance experts determine the scope of work and procedures necessary to achieve safe and effective flood or water recovery of structures and contents. Water damage restoration is divided into three basic categories for a typical water damage project.
category 1 — clean water.
Examples of clean water sources may include broken pipes, tub overflows, sink overflows, many appliance malfunctions, falling rainwater, broken toilet tanks, and in some cases even toilet bowls.
category 2 – gray water.
Gray or unhygienic water contains a certain amount of contamination. Some examples of “grey” polluted water can be: overflow from a dishwater, washing machine or toilet bowl, broken aquarium and perhaps a leaky waterbed. Gray water in flooded structures is significantly aggravated by time and temperature.
category 3 – black water.
Heavy and highly unsanitary, “black” water results from large volumes of sewage entering a structure. This category also includes all forms of groundwater rising from rivers or streams and seawater. This also includes all forms of sewer overflow or damage. In situations where structural components and/or contents are highly contaminated with materials such as pesticides, heavy metals or toxic organics, the water damage is known as “black” water.
If you are unlucky enough to encounter any of the listed damages. The correct protocol is to start the drying process, cleaning up and antibacterial sanitizing as soon as possible. In this way, a large part of the structure and substructure can be saved from further damage.
