WASHINGTON

National security leaders from the United States, Japan and South Korea on Thursday denounced North Korea’s latest round of ballistic missile launches and vowed to stay on track with each other in response.

Japan’s National Security Secretariat General Secretary Akiba Takeo, South Korea’s National Security Advisor Cho Tae-yong and US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said the launches were “a clear violation of multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions and demonstrated North Korea’s threat of illegal weapons.” Mass destruction.”

They continued to call for action from the UN Security Council, but this is unlikely to generate much interest. Russia and China have repeatedly used their status as permanent members of the body to prevent the council from punishing Pyongyang.

In May 2022, the countries blocked a resolution that would tighten existing sanctions in response to ballistic missile tests that ran counter to council resolutions last year. All 13 other members of the body voted in favor.

China and Russia provided diplomatic support to North Korea, preventing it from making a press statement.

Earlier on Thursday, North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles that landed in Japan’s exclusive economic zone, local media reported. North Korea last conducted a missile test on April 13.

The latest launch round demonstrates that “all countries should fully implement UN Security Council resolutions on DPRK, which aim to prohibit DPRK from acquiring the technologies and materials necessary to carry out these destabilizing launches,” said the US, Japan and South Korea (ROK).

“The United States firmly reaffirms its solid security commitments to both Japan and the RoC,” the countries said in a statement released after their national security leaders met in Tokyo.

At this meeting, Sullivan, Akiba and Cho “discussed ways to further strengthen tripartite cooperation, including key step coordination in responding to the threats posed by North Korea’s illegal nuclear and missile programs.”

They also confirmed that Japan-ROK-US cooperation will not be shaken by provocations and shared their belief that DPRK should take the path of diplomacy rather than continuing provocations.”
