Uber, the US-based global ride-hailing company, has decided to lay off 200 workers in its hiring division, according to multiple reports.

The decision is a result of the company’s efforts to maintain a stable headcount and manage costs, according to Wednesday’s reports.

Layoffs represent 35% of the hiring division, though less than 1% of the company’s total workforce of approximately 33,000 employees worldwide.

Uber’s rival Lyft began preparing to lay off at least 1,200 workers, or about 30% of its 4,000 workforce, in April to better meet the needs of riders and drivers.

American online food ordering and delivery platform Grubhub announced on June 12 that it has decided to cut its workforce by about 15%, laying off about 400 employees.

Dozens of companies, particularly in the tech sector, are cutting their jobs as many industries struggle with low revenues, falling advertising revenues and fears of a recession in the US economy.

In recent months, Reddit, Disney, 3M, Amazon, Yahoo, Affirm, Zoom, Dell, IBM, Microsoft, Salesforce, PayPal and Google’s parent company Alphabet have laid off thousands of workers.
